A Practical Web Development Toolkit

Use the tools already in your browser

Browser developer tools can help explain why a page looks wrong or behaves unexpectedly. In Chrome DevTools, the Elements panel lets you inspect HTML and CSS. The Console shows logged messages, while the Network panel helps you inspect requests and responses.

Start with a concrete problem: a missing image, a button that does nothing or text that overflows. Check the relevant evidence before changing the code.

Make your checks repeatable

Keep a short list of the journeys that matter: opening navigation, visiting a service, viewing a project and validating an enquiry form. Run those checks after a change, alongside the project’s build and any relevant automated tests.

Preview different layouts

Device simulation is useful for checking breakpoints and narrow screens. It complements checking the site on the devices your visitors actually use. Look for clipped content, awkward spacing and controls that are difficult to reach.

A consistent routine is usually more helpful than collecting more tools.
